20th Oct - Chilly but fine
Visited Chartwell the home that the Churchill's brought pre-WW2
These large leaved plants seem to be in many of the gardens we have visited. So far we have not found out what they are called. These were monsters - shows what a sheltered and damp environment can do.
In the recent TV show about the Churchills, he brought the house because of the views. We could well understand that even though it's been 'grown out' to some extent.
The house itself is quite 'modest' in size compared with some we have seen. But it's packed with fascinating memorabilia and is largely as it was when they lived there after WW2.
The gardens were great - particularly the vedges, and roses s well as the Dahlias - obviously planted en-masse to provide cut flowers to the house. We brought some apples in the orchard near the wall that Churchill used to help build when he was having "Black Dog" day.He certainly was a larger than life character. I found the place well worth visit.
