Wexford to Waterford

9th Sep – Beautiful Weather.

From Wexford we drove around the coat to Kilmore Quay. A great little fishing village full of thatched cottages.

Then on to the Hook Head light house which has been in continuous operation for 800 years! The Norman construction has not been changed or even repaired much. The walls are possibly 5 M thick at the bottom and around 3 M at the top. In the 19th century they added a multi-ton 3 or 4 story extension when they stopped lighting the coal fires and made their own coal gas. Eventually (around 1970) they went electric.
Then North to New Ross to see the 3 masted famine emigrant ship in very good condition and to view some tapestries in the Norman style. They were very well done but actually embroideries I’m reliably informed. Just about all the driving was on very narrow roads between stone walls – O.K. for 2 cars to pass but trucks were another story.

Finally down to Waterford – a large town, expensive parking and nowhere to do the ever growing pile of washing. Tomorrow we’ll visit the crystal works and then head west into the country.

  1. Did you get to go into the lighthouse? Sounds like you too are getting a bit smelling. Hope you find a washing machine soon
