14th Oct - wet up North, better further South.
Drove down South to Milton Keynes. Mostly on the M6 where you can see how dangerous it now is. Loads of trucks - some overtaking others at 71mph versus 70mph leaving one lane for everyone else. Many people driving at 90 - 100mph sometimes in the rain, including the infamous 'White Vans'. If you are not doing 80mph everyone will tailgate you less than one car length behind. O.K. enough whinging
We got down early enough to visit Bletchley park - where the Enigma codes were broken in WW2 This was a really high point for me as I could not really 'relate' to many of the people who lived in many of the Tudor and earlier houses we visited. But We have seen and read so much about Bletchley that I could believe that Turing and some of the other code breakers could walk into the room at any time.
The good thing about going on Thursday was that the Museum of Computing was open (only 2-3 days per week. Saw the rebuilt 'Collosus and Bombe' machines and even a working Elliott 803 system which I tried to sell unsuccessfully in the 1950s
On the way back to our hotel we stopped for a light meal and drink (Coffee!) at the Black Horse Pub next to the Grand Union Canal.
